The location, staff, and room were great, but the tablet used to control the lights wouldn’t connect (I rebooted it three times and kept getting “No Connection”). Individual lights had no separate switches; the only way to turn one off was to use the “Master Switch,” which left the room completely dark. I was told the maintenance crew had left, that this problem happened occasionally, and no one could fix it. They offered to bring me a lantern—seriously? A hotel of this stature and price giving me a battery-operated lantern to find the “Master Switch” feels absurd. The last time I faced a similar issue was in Kinshasa, Zaire, in 1974, when all lights went out at the Intercontinental Hotel; they apologized profusely and gave me a torch plus a complimentary night. At the Via, when I checked out at 7 a.m. in the nearly dark morning to catch an appointment, there were no apologies, no compensation, no offer to change rooms.

The room was huge and surprisingly had two large bathrooms. The living area was very comfortable. Breakfast via room service was fast and flavorful. The hotel sits right across from Oracle Park, and the valet parking was fantastic. The only downside was that my room faced an alley.
