“5 star wannabe”
The location is gorgeous and the property seems to have huge potential. The setting is tranquil, surrounded by nature, and some of the gardens and common areas keep the Provençal charm that first drew us to Domaine de Chalamon. The staff we met were friendly, welcoming, and clearly doing their best, especially given the apparently limited staffing. Unfortunately, those positives made the overall experience even more disappointing, because the foundations for a truly special property are clearly there. What we didn’t like was the gap between what is marketed and priced as a luxury experience and what was actually delivered. The property felt tired and poorly maintained. The main fountain was completely dry and neglected, paths and parts of the grounds were not properly cared for, umbrellas and outdoor furniture looked old, and the tennis court was very different from the impression given by the photographs. Inside, there were chipped and heavily scuffed doors, marked paintwork and damaged finishes. Even basic details at breakfast, such as the salt and pepper mills, were visibly dirty. Service was also far below expectations. At breakfast, one person appeared to be responsible for virtually everything: taking orders, serving, clearing tables and looking after guests. This is not a criticism of the staff member, who was doing their best, but of the level of staffing provided. Most disappointing is that similar issues have already appeared in previous reviews, followed by management responses promising improvements. Those improvements were certainly not evident during our stay. Any one of these things could be overlooked. Taken together, however, they made this feel like a three‑star experience with a five‑star price tag.
