The spot was great – parking, comfy sheets, separate bath and toilet, kettle, and the staff at both the restaurant and the hotel were friendly. But the entrance was a nightmare: it’s a back exit turned into a makeshift door, uneven, slick, and right next to trash that stank. We couldn’t get any supplies for four days – had to walk out to the Van der Valk to grab toilet paper and stuff. The key cards kept dying, so we had to change them every day.

Parking was free and the hotel had a nice vibe. The downside? The little stairwell behind the building smelled like garbage, and the bathroom had no trash can. The toilet was clogged, a water bottle was empty on the windowsill, and the key card from the previous guest was still there. A shower head was broken and left on the floor, and the hanger was snapped.

The terrace was a highlight, but the hallway floor was filthy and the old emergency exit was overgrown with weeds, making the way to the rooms feel like a war‑zone trench. The kitchen smelled like unwashed fish heads and trash cans, and the food at the restaurant made me sick because the doneness I requested wasn’t respected. I’d specifically asked for a first‑floor room because of knee issues, yet they put me on the second floor with double the stairs.

After two days, the room and bed finally got cleaned. The only way in was a shabby fire escape at the back, with trash cans from the restaurant below that stank. When we arrived, the room wasn’t cleaned – wet towels and a still-sleeping bed. The Van der Valk reception (also the restaurant’s front desk) said they weren’t responsible, so we didn’t know who was. By chance, a staff member from the Van der Valk who handled this part came by and finally cleaned the room and gave us fresh towels.
