The hotel was conveniently located just 2 blocks from my family home and the house where I grew up, and a few blocks from the main plaza. The front desk staff, the waiters, and the housekeeping team were all very pleasant, especially toward my wife. I was visiting Tarapoto after 43 years and my wife was there for the first time; we are both in our mid‑seventies. The morning after we arrived, my wife suffered a severe accident in the bathroom after finishing her shower. She fell hard onto the floor while trying to open the sliding glass door, landing in a sitting position with her right leg inside the small bathroom shower and her left leg outside, fracturing her left wrist/arm and spraining her left knee with a large hematoma that spread down her leg. She needed immediate emergency care at a nearby clinic. The incident left her in unbearable pain across her entire left body, unable to walk, unable to sleep well, heavily medicated, and bedridden for 10 days at the hotel. The cause was pure negligence by the hotel manager for not having the bathroom/shower ready or fixed for guests, especially senior guests. The bathroom shower was tiny, had very glossy/slippery tile floors that became slick with water/soap, no bathmat to stand on, no safety bar inside to hold on, and no doorknob to open the sliding glass door (missing), requiring a finger to be placed inside the hole to slide/open the door. When the incident happened, I could not lift my wife from the floor because of the small entrance and the position she fell on the floor; I ran down to get the manager to help me lift her, placed her on the bed, and then got the medical attention needed. We left Tarapoto on Sunday afternoon and arrived in the USA early Tuesday morning after a grueling trip that required assistance at every airport. We just saw our doctor, and she will see a specialist for follow‑up care. This experience caused my wife, me, and our entire family in Peru extreme stress and sorrow that this happened to my wife.
