The kindness and availability of the manager and his family. The location. The hearty meals.

I had a great stay at Ruins Villa. Upali taught me a lot about the jungle, Sri Lanka, and the local way of life. He went out of his way to help during my stay. The food was amazing, and you can also rent bikes at a very cheap price to explore the Ancient City.

The breakfast was Sri‑Lankan, not the bland continental style, and the dinner was great. The water heater seemed broken, yet we still got enough warm water. The host was extremely helpful, speaks good English, so we could have deep conversations. The location is good, right next to one of the park exits; the main entrance is about 4 km away, and the host offers decent bicycles. UK‑style sockets are available. The bed was comfortable. We were worried about mosquitoes because of the dengue outbreak, but there were practically none—probably due to the long dry season—and we stayed in September 2026. The downside was the extreme heat during our visit, so even with a fan on high (and earplugs needed, also for the dogs at night), we could barely sleep the first night. Also, there is no soap in the bathroom, but you can request it. The mosquito nets have holes, but you don’t need them if the fan is strong enough.

The place was quiet and the owner was accessible. I rented a bike for 1000 rupees to explore the archaeological site, which is very close.
