The hotel’s proximity to downtown SF is a big plus—every time I visit, I book here.

I liked the soft bed and clean sheets; it’s just right for the type of hotel it is.

It offers good value with low expectations. The rooms were upgraded in 2017, the location is great, and I enjoyed the city noise and the old building; it’s basically a hostel with controlled access. The TV options are limited, the electronics are modern but basic, and the shared bathroom is always an adventure.

If you think “it can’t be that bad,” think again. The Utah Inn treats “historic hotel” as “we stopped maintaining it around 1954.” The windows look like they haven’t been washed since Eisenhower, and they’re so filthy you see the glass, not the view. The place is just above an SRO, and the shared bathrooms are cleaner than gas station washrooms. There are five electrical outlets in the room, but only one works; I felt lucky to find it. The sink is there, but there’s no hot water, no cups, no face cloths. The carpet looks like it deserves heritage status and has never been steamed; bring flip‑flops because bare feet will hurt. The bed was absurdly short—my 5’5” frame didn’t fit well. The neighborhood is dodgy, and I live on the edge of the Downtown Eastside, so I’m not sensitive. The Utah Saloon downstairs is a cool old bar that you’ll hear late into the night, and a streetcar clunks past every ten minutes outside your window, giving the feel of sleeping in a subway car. It’s close to Oracle Park, but you’d be better off staying elsewhere to avoid wondering if someone will break in. The place has potential—minimal investment, deep cleaning, basic maintenance, and some pride could make it a charming old hotel—but as it stands, it’s not quirky, not charming, not vintage—just gross.
