The front‑of‑house team was polite, smart, professional and eager to help, and the hotel’s façade and outdoor spaces were beautifully repurposed, earning architectural awards; the rooms were clean and tidy, and the gym was excellent for a shophouse hotel. The pool is shallow enough only for sitting, but that creative choice is still worth a nod. However, the rooms themselves were generic, dimly lit, and could be found in any hotel anywhere; they lacked Peranakan touches like decorative tiles or vases, and only the lobby, atrium and façade were attractive. Because the hotel is large, it’s hard to decorate every room well, so other places like Majestic and 5 Heeren create a more pleasant atmosphere. Rooms facing Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock had windows but were very noisy, with no attempt at soundproofing such as triple glazing or acoustic panels. Parking is almost always full, so the first‑come, first‑served system is risky if you plan to drive in and out frequently.

Baba House is a beautiful building, and the room we stayed in was modern, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. Breakfast options were excellent, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

A stunning Peranakan‑style boutique hotel right in the city centre, with friendly staff, a spacious room, a comfortable bed and complimentary bottled water. The downside is that, despite the room’s charm, it has no outward‑opening window—only two tiny fixed panes looking onto the courtyard, which felt a bit oppressive and poorly ventilated, and the European‑style breakfast could be better.

The location is good, but there is a lot of noise.
