“Fantastisch”
The building, its history, the friendliness, and the quality were all great – we’ll definitely return! It’s clear that covid hurt the hotel (the last Michelin & Gault Millau award was in 2018), but they’re clearly back on track. We didn’t know we had to book at the hotel restaurant (Robert II), where we would have loved to eat. There were a few small issues, but a lot of potential – we’ll come back! The breakfast could also be more extensive.
“A pleasant stop on the way back to Calais”
The room was clean and comfortable, though a little dated, and it had a nice bathroom. We had a drink at the bar, which offered very comfortable seating. The hotel has three restaurants; we booked the Vasco, the food was okay but the service disappointed us – it was very slow and the waiter seemed miserable – so it wasn’t the experience we were hoping for to end our holiday.
“Stay when there are no group conferences! they seemed to have priority”
Breakfast was fine, dinner at La Vasco was good, but we weren’t told – even after checking in – that it didn’t open until 7.00 pm, so we walked over only to find it shut, the doors locked, and we were standing outside in the cold. Reception didn’t tell us where any of the facilities were or give us a tour of the large hotel, so we kept asking for directions. Our room was booked a few months ago but we were then assigned a disabled room that wasn’t suitable for us, and reception didn’t explain that. The bathroom was an open shower, water splashed everywhere because the drain didn’t empty quickly, and even the next morning the water hadn’t drained, so we were paddling in water to reach the sink and toilet – not good if you have to get up in the middle of the night. The bed was pretty low. When we asked why we had a disabled room, reception said there were two large groups in the hotel who were noisy and this was the quiet area for other guests. That spoiled our stay somewhat. Wi‑Fi was also a problem, not working for about 7 hours when we arrived.
“Loved our stay.”
A great place to stop with a nice restaurant. Nothing else to add.
Beautiful setting and convenient for travel to the UK. Not very welcoming – we arrived before our room was ready and were ushered to a lounge with no offer of a drink. The room needed attention to details: two lights weren’t working and the carpet looked extremely spotty.
