The house and room were very clean, and the host, Nobel, was friendly. He drove us to the station, helped pick a bus, and made sure we were comfortably seated. Thanks a lot, Nobel!

The accommodation had no windows to open and, contrary to the listing, no balcony. I had to climb to a higher floor to reach a terrace that offered no shade, and street noise was loud. The shower did work hot!

The best part was the location, in the villa area of downtown, a 10‑minute walk to the bus terminal and Dutch fort. It’s a well‑maintained villa with a spacious sitting and dining hall that has great potential yet remains untapped. The kitchen only has cups, no kettle, fridge, or water dispenser, so that’s a waste. The host is a retired man who seems unwilling to improve because of budget limits and lack of competition in downtown. He makes you feel indebted, as basic items like the shared hot‑water shower, mosquito repellent, and drinking hot water are offered only after a request. We also paid 12+ USD/night for a budget room with just a toilet, cold shower, and fan, which isn’t cheap for a Sri Lankan guesthouse even in popular places like Galle. Competition is scarce in downtown, with most guesthouses on the beach of Batticaloa.

It’s really close to the lake, bus stop, and local market, and there are cute cafés around the lake for a nice sunset view. Decent for the price and works for a short one‑night transit stay. They arranged a tuk‑tuk for me early in the morning, which I’m very thankful for. Basically all rooms have AC, but you don’t get the remote because you paid for a basic room. It feels like a marketing trick; some might end up paying extra if they can’t handle the heat. The washroom had pigeon feathers scattered, no toilet paper, and everything looked very old—needs a lot of maintenance.

The location is pretty good, close to the fort and the bus station. We chose the no‑AC option and it was very hot with little circulation, so we opened the windows for the night.
