Loch Maree Guest Farm & Field Camp

We enjoyed the stay so much and wished that we could stay longer! We went for a walk in the dunes, and when we returned, there was freshly baked bread on the kitchen table—just reminding us of the warm Kalahari hospitality. We will surely stay at Loch Maree again, should we get the chance.

“Negativní zkušenost!”

I can’t comment on the solitary accommodation because my SUV/F‑Ranger got stuck on an incredibly rutted access road about 6 km before arrival. I want to flag a very negative experience with this host; in my 35 years of traveling I’ve never encountered anything like it. First, their question about a two‑night stay with an SUV arrived very late—on the day of arrival at 9:20 am—while I was driving a 4×4 F‑Ranger and had no roaming in Botswana, so I only read the message that evening. After 600 km in Botswana and another 40 km from Askham, I was halted about 6 km from the destination on an almost impassable, flooded, rutted road with no mobile signal to call for help. Because of that I had to scramble for alternative lodging, which I luckily found in the village of Askham. The host was informed of my forced change to a two‑night stay immediately after I arrived at the new place, via phone from my new host. Since this was already my third visit to the Khalagadi area, I expected a 50 % refund of the amount already paid, as it wasn’t my fault, but the host chose to remain silent and, through Booking, refused to return half of the prepaid sum. I unfortunately didn’t manage to take photos of the worst part of the road.

“Erg lastig, want niet bereikbaar”

We never actually made it there because it was impossible to reach. The owner had told us early in the morning that road 1 was closed because of heavy rain (even though that was known for a long time) and that the alternate route was unusable for a normal car because of water holes and mud. We let the owner know we had to turn back (photos are available), but since then he has not responded to any of our messages. This is something we’ve never experienced before and we find it very unprofessional.
