We stayed at Chequers for just one night because we were attending a nearby wedding, but the quirky historic building pleasantly surprised us. You have to be careful of the various small steps and steep stairs that connect the different levels. John texted us early to let us know the room was ready and that we could arrive early if we wanted. When we booked, we asked if a gluten‑free breakfast could be provided, and that was no problem at all; he reassured us with messages before and upon arrival. Chequers offers a lovely range of cooked breakfasts, cereals, fruit, yogurts, juices, tea, and good coffee. The interior is mostly vintage, restored, and antique pieces, and if you find something you like, the owners might be open to offers as that’s a side interest of theirs. The stairs and steps were a bit tricky but understandable.

The accommodation felt cozy, uncomfortable, and very clean. Breakfast was excellent, with a great selection of fresh fruit and fresh yoghurts. Overall, everything met a high standard. My only minor complaint was that the mattress was quite hard.

The breakfast was excellent. The first room they offered was absurdly small. The second room was much better, but there’s only one doorway that can be passed if you’re less than 5 ft tall—watch out!
