I had one of the worst hotel experiences ever. From the moment I arrived, everything went wrong. The hotel was hard to find, with bad signage and almost no accessibility. After finally locating it, I was shocked by what I saw. The building looked old, neglected, and run‑down. The elevator was ancient, and the whole property had a strong musty smell. It felt more like an abandoned building than a hotel. The check‑in process was unbelievably slow and unprofessional. While every modern hotel uses a computerized system, the receptionist spent nearly 15 minutes manually typing my passport number, visa details, and other information before printing everything on what looked like an outdated printer. The receptionist was unfriendly, rude, and made me feel like an inconvenience rather than a paying guest. The biggest shock came when it was time to receive my room. I discovered that I had been assigned a shared room with multiple strangers, something that had not been made clear to me. It felt like a deliberate bait‑and‑switch tactic designed to pressure guests into paying more. I had no real choice but to pay approximately 50 % extra just to get a private room. Unfortunately, the private room was no better. The moment I opened the door, I was hit by a strong smell of mold and dampness, as if the room had been closed for months without ventilation. The room felt dirty, neglected, and completely unacceptable for paying guests. To make matters worse, there was no hot water. When I complained, I was told that I needed to let the water run for about three minutes before it would become hot. This is not what anyone expects from a hotel that charges guests for accommodation. At that point, I had enough and decided to leave the hotel early. Despite everything I had experienced, they refused to offer any refund or compensation.

The staff were phenomenal! They did everything they could to help and make sure you’re comfortable. The location was ridiculously central, so close to everything you need. The photo I added is the exact spot. We struggled to find it at first, but a wonderful local helped us, and hopefully this photo will help other guests.

After a long break I returned to Shanghai and found the hotel just a two‑minute walk from the People’s Square station, right at the crossroads of Guizhou Road and Nanjing East Road Pedestrian Street, the city’s most famous shopping area. From the property it’s only about a ten‑minute straight walk to the Bund, and a kilometre south lies the well‑known Yuyuan Mall and the Old City Temple, where the manager, who speaks fluent Japanese, proved extremely helpful for any first‑time visitor. Trains from Shanghai Railway Station, Hongqiao Station, Hongqiao Airport or Pudong Airport can drop you straight into the city centre and onto People’s Square, which is incredibly convenient; right beneath the hotel you’ll find a steamed bun shop and plenty of souvenir stalls, and the newly opened Shen Daceng White‑Jade Dumpling shop and Shanxi Road Food Street are also within reach. If you have any concerns you can call the manager via the shop’s website beforehand. Compared with the surrounding mid‑range hotels this place offers better value and a comfortable feel; the room isn’t huge but more than adequate, the shower pressure was impressive, and the grey 100 % cotton bed was very comfortable. With the manager on site I felt completely at ease; he’s genuinely kind and attentive. I look forward to returning.

I walked into the room and was shocked to see adult toys on the side table - it was just plain disgusting. To make matters worse, I spotted bed bugs crawling around, which was a total nightmare. The whole situation felt really uncomfortable and I couldn't believe they wouldn't even bother to hide the explicit stuff, let alone deal with the pest issue.
