We stayed for two nights and were welcomed warmly by our host; the room was spotless and the bed super comfy. We couldn’t find any faults with the place. We were in Ahipara for a funeral, so we didn’t get to sit down for a hot breakfast, but the aroma was amazing! The spot was spot on for us, just about 20 minutes from the marae. All in all, a very cozy and enjoyable stay, and I’d gladly recommend it—thanks, Alastair. A tiny note: the driveway and signage could use a tweak, especially at night when the sign is hard to spot, and there were a few potholes. Other than that, no problems.

The absolute highlight was the breakfast, served in the owner’s private rooms at his living‑room table with skill and obvious joy, turning it into a morning conversation circle that he skillfully led with as many guests as possible. It was a truly extraordinary experience, not just because of the atmosphere but also because of the quality of the food—one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve had in New Zealand. It left such a deep impression that it outweighed the otherwise less appealing aspects of our short stopover. The property consists of several bungalow‑style buildings that are clearly aging, evident in many places. We had a twin‑bedroom that, on the evening of an otherwise sunny day, smelled rather musty when we entered.
