The property is a charming period building in an excellent spot, the breakfast is freshly cooked with local produce, and there’s plenty of homely common areas to unwind. We liked our room (no5), but like all upper‑floor rooms it was small—no problem for us, but if you’re over 6 ft tall, avoid those rooms; it didn’t bother us and we appreciated the compact space.

Merrijig Inn is definitely a unique spot and a food lover’s paradise. Dinner was superb, and breakfast offered many tempting homemade treats. It was a bit too early in the year to sit outside and enjoy the garden, but both the garden and the house were full of charm. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, the bed was comfy, the surrounding area quiet, and just a stone’s throw from the quay and riverside walk. The attic room had low ceilings, and the stairs up were a bit steep, so be warned if you’re not particularly agile.
