When I arrived, the manager told me to cancel my online booking; when I declined, he warned that if I didn’t cancel it, the room I’d chosen wouldn’t be available and that keeping the same room would cost more than the quoted amount.

Varanasi's chaos is a world away from this hotel's peaceful oasis. The location is a major plus – I was a short walk from the temple I came to see, and the Ghats were just around the corner. The staff were super helpful too – I was stuck without a sim card and they kindly lent me theirs for the week. The only downside is the room itself, which is a bit Spartan – no windows, but at least it's air-conditioned.
