The food was excellent, the room spacious and clean, and the family‑style onsen in the Japanese‑Western suite featured a lovely cypress bathtub that felt great, plus the private open‑air cave bath was a highlight; on the downside, the lack of an elevator was tough on my bad leg, and the older lady at the front desk was rude, making snide remarks, never apologising for mistakes, which made the service feel unpleasant, though the other staff members were very helpful.

The room was clean and roomy, especially the immaculate bathroom, and the staff all gave a refined and courteous impression, while the stone‑grilled beef at dinner was delicious; unfortunately, the shower in the cypress bath only produced water without any pressure.

Even though I warned them the day before that I don’t eat meat, they still managed to serve me a suitable meal, and the portions were generous yet easy on the stomach, which told me the ingredients were top‑quality; the staff greeted me with bright smiles, the spring water felt superb, and I enjoyed both the open‑air bath and the more unusual tubs. On the downside, the dinner and breakfast were delicious but a little over‑generous, making me feel wasteful about the leftover rice, we couldn’t catch the views of Ear‑Nori Mountains or the Chikugo River—our room seemed to be the only one without a decent outlook, which was disappointing, the stair‑only access to the room strained my knee and would likely bother older guests, and given the clever design of the baths, stronger shading would have made them much more comfortable during the hot summer.

The onsen was great, the futon and pillow were nice, and the staff did their best to help with translations; the food was delicious, especially the breakfast. We may have upset the staff by checking out 5 minutes late, arriving home late (we didn’t know the door would lock after 23:00), and asking for a late checkout that was denied. The bright white light in the room was too harsh, and I wish there was a dimming option.
