A short history
Abilene was established in 1881 as a stock-shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway. Cattle drives moved herds along trails toward the railhead. The city expanded through ranching, oil discoveries in the 1920s, and the establishing of Dyess Air Force Base in 1956.
