Bandar Lampung's history was fundamentally altered on August 27, 1883, when Mount Krakatoa erupted in the Sunda Strait. Tsunami waves destroyed coastal Teluk Betung, forcing surviving communities to rebuild inland toward Tanjung Karang. The Dutch colonial government developed Tanjung Karang into a rail terminal in 1912 to extract pepper, rubber, and coffee from South Sumatra. The two districts were merged into a single municipality in 1959 as Tanjungkarang-Telukbetung and officially renamed Bandar Lampung in 1983.
