Gwalior

A sandstone fort city carved by music and monarchs.

introduction

Overview

Gwalior rises around a steep sandstone plateau capped by a thousand-year-old fortress. Below the rock, the city splits into the 19th-century royal district of Lashkar and the modern grid around the railway station. You move through it by auto-rickshaw, navigating narrow bazaar lanes and wide royal avenues. Plan for steep climbs on the fort and quiet morning ragas in old courtyards.

Arrival trick

Fast trains from Delhi reach Gwalior Junction in three hours. Pre-paid auto-rickshaw booths operate right outside platform one.

UNESCO recognition

UNESCO designated Gwalior a Creative City of Music in 2023. The title recognizes its centuries of dhrupad vocal traditions.

Planning trick

The fort plateau stretches three kilometres long. Hire an auto-rickshaw for the top circuit instead of walking between isolated sites.

food

Bedai, Morena gajak, and bazaar sweets

Gwalior begins its day at the deep fryer. Breakfast in the old town means bedai—a crisp, lentils-stuffed poori served alongside a fiery, thin potato curry. Cooks fry them in large brass vats along Subhash Chowk from six in the morning until sellout at ten.In winter, sesame seeds and jaggery take over the city's sweet shops. The nearby town of Morena supplies Gwalior with ground-sesame brittle called gajak. Shops along Naya Bazaar hammer sesame brittle into paper-thin sheets using wooden mallets throughout the day.

history

A short history

Legend attributes the city's founding to a 3rd-century chieftain cured of leprosy by the hermit Gwalipa. The fortress plateau subsequently became a prime strategic prize for ruling dynasties across northern India. Its location controlled trade corridors between Delhi and the Deccan plateau. The Tomar dynasty brought artistic prominence in the 15th century under Raja Man Singh Tomar. He built the blue-tiled palace and nurtured dhrupad classical music. Control later shifted through Mughal, Maratha, and British hands before the Scindia dynasty established their modern capital in Lashkar.
