A short history
French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe named the area 'La Petite Roche' in 1722 after a small rock formation along the riverbank. The settlement became the territorial capital of Arkansas in 1821 due to its central geographic location.In 1957, Little Rock became an international focus of the Civil Rights Movement when nine African American students desegregated Central High School under federal military escort ordered by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
