A short history
The Petitcodiac River area was long stewarded by the Mi'kmaq before Acadian families established the farming village of Terre-Rouge in the 1730s. Following the Acadian Expulsion by British forces in 1755, Pennsylvania Dutch settlers resettled the area in 1766. The community was later named Monckton—the 'k' was dropped by clerical error—and grew rapidly into a major hub during the 19th-century railway expansion.
