Yangshuo

Yangshuo sits among thousands of limestone karst peaks along the Li and Yulong rivers in Guangxi. The township centre runs on nocturnal tourism, but the surrounding countryside offers flat valley rides and quiet river stretches. Rent an e-bike or bicycle to bypass road congestion and reach the village lanes within twenty minutes. Expect distinct regional food, steep limestone hikes, and heavy domestic crowds during national holidays.

Yangshuo cooking revolves around river catches cooked with local produce. Beer fish (Pijiu Yu) is the definitive regional dish. Cooks fry fresh carp or catfish whole in tea-seed oil, then braise it with local Li River beer, green peppers, garlic, and fresh tomatoes in a shallow wok. You choose your live fish by weight at the entrance of local restaurants.

Yangshuo developed as a river trading port under the Sui Dynasty in 590 AD. For centuries, timber, agricultural goods, and regional crafts moved along the Li River corridor between Guilin and Guangzhou. The arrival of independent international backpackers in the 1980s transformed West Street into one of mainland China's earliest backpacker hubs.

Choose your stay by noise tolerance and transport plans. Town centre hotels put you within walking distance of restaurants, buses, and nightlife, but background noise continues past midnight. River valley guesthouses offer quiet countryside surroundings, but you must arrange scooters or rideshare cars for evening meals.

Yangshuo has no commercial airport of its own. Most visitors arrive via high-speed train at Yangshuo Railway Station or fly into Guilin Liangjiang Airport (KWL). Within Yangshuo, e-bikes and pedal bicycles are the fastest way to navigate rural valley tracks without getting caught in road bottlenecks.

• E-bikes cost 50–80 RMB for a full day. No Chinese driver's license is needed for light electric bikes.

• DiDi rideshare works reliably in town. Link a foreign credit card to Alipay before arriving.

• Motorized private cars are blocked from entering Ten Mile Gallery between 08:00 and 18:00; use electric bikes or public shuttles.

• Yulong River rafts are non-motorized, pushed by a single boatman with a bamboo pole. Buy tickets at official dock counters.

Yangshuo is cheaper than major Chinese cities like Shanghai or Shenzhen, but tourist attractions charge set admission fees. Expect higher lodging rates during Chinese May Day, Golden Week in October, and Summer school holidays.
