Yonago

Yonago functions as the primary transit turnstile for Tottori Prefecture and the San'in region. You trade big-city polish for direct access to coastal hot springs, Mount Daisen, and the JR Sakai Line. Most travellers use it as an efficient base rather than a multi-day urban destination.

Yonago sits where Sea of Japan fisheries dock at nearby Sakaiminato and cattle graze on Mount Daisen's lower slopes. Winter brings Matsuba male snow crab and female seko crab to local markets. Daisen chicken dominates yakitori counters, recognizable by its lean texture and rich flavor.

Yonago developed as a merchant town beneath Shiroyama Castle during the Edo period. Positioned on the eastern shore of Lake Nakaumi, it controlled trade routes between Izumo and Hoki provinces. Railroad expansion in the early 20th century transformed it into San'in's primary rail junction.

   Yonago Station opens on San'in's first operational railway line, connecting the regional port with inland trade.

Yonago is easy to navigate by rail and bus. JR trains connect the main station to Sakaiminato, Matsue, and Tottori. Local Hinomarubus and Nihon Kotsu routes serve Kaike Onsen and Mount Daisen.

• ICOCA cards work at JR Yonago Station gates, but regional buses around Daisen and Kaike still require paper fare tickets or cash.

• The JR Sakai Line features trains painted with GeGeGe no Kitaro anime figures. Each station on the line has an alternate yokai monster name.

• Daisen loop buses run frequently from April to November but drop to reduced winter services when snow affects mountain routes.
