“Beautiful restored inn but not suitable for seniors in some respects.”
The Craignair Inn is a well‑preserved historic building from the 1930s that once served quarry workers, and it sits on a beautiful plot with a short causeway to Clark Island, a nature preserve. I’ve stayed there three times: 35 years ago on our honeymoon under different ownership, about four years ago with our dog (they’re dog‑friendly), and recently for our 35th wedding anniversary. The inn has two buildings: the original 1930s structure and a newer one where we stayed with our dog. This time we booked a king suite in the main inn, which has a bedroom, separate sitting room, and bath. The room was meticulously finished, squeaky clean, and had no TV, which was fine for us. The bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent—don’t let the “vegetarian” label mislead you—and the extra evening meal was also great. The staff, who are the owners, were friendly and helpful. The downside was that our suite was on the third floor, reached by two flights of steeper‑than‑normal stairs and no elevator, which is unsuitable for people in their 70s. The listing didn’t mention the floor, so I probably wouldn’t have booked it if I’d known. The period‑correct bathroom, while impeccably clean, was tiny, especially the toilet, which was hard to use. Above the lavatory was a hand‑lettered sign asking guests to “please preserve our well water.” When paying $500+ for a room, I don’t want to worry about saving water. The bathroom’s size and the sign may seem quaint to some, but they were off‑kilter for me, which is why I deducted two stars.
