Being outside the city center made me worry I'd get lost, but it was quiet and relaxing; the old‑style hotel was spacious and clean, breakfast tasty, will return. The only downside was the cigarette smell, but I got used to it.

The staff were really nice and helpful. Since the location was out of the way, the host drove us to the nearest train station each day. Breakfast was a typical Japanese spread with a small amount of western food (bread rolls and eggs). There wasn't much choice in Nikko and this was relatively cheap. The location was out of the way; it is a 50 min walk from the nearest station. The hotel is very tired. We expected the restaurant to be open for dinner but it wasn't. (They drove us to the nearest 711 so we could buy something on the first night). We forgot to request a non‑smoking room and the room we were allocated smelled strongly of stale cigarette smoke. They were unable to change it.
