A warm, relaxed spot. Our room faced the main walkway by the river, beautiful and quiet even on a Friday in mid‑October. It was huge, with tatami floors, nice bedding, a thick duvet, and a separate toilet/sink area (the shared bath meant only the shower facilities downstairs were shared). We didn’t use the sauna or hotel bath, so I can’t comment on that. A public onsen next door was more old‑school but lovely and not crowded. Breakfast was traditional Japanese; it worked for us, but if you want eggs and bacon, this isn’t it. We wished we’d stayed two nights because it was so relaxing. After checkout, we left our bag at the train station lockers and spent the late morning on the ropeway. We ate dinner at a local noodle place we loved. We don’t eat huge dinners, so we chose this ryokan knowing they don’t serve dinner. I would have liked an espresso machine with milk at breakfast.

The location was spot on, right at the start of Kinosaki Onsen, giving easy access to the restaurants and public baths. It sits next to a family mart and several great food spots. The staff went above and beyond, offering recommendations for food and local activities, and handled the language barrier with ease—just fantastic.

A charming onsen hotel of medium size, just a 10‑minute walk from the station. The building is old but appears recently renovated in a traditional style with tatami mats everywhere (no shoes inside). Our lovely room was on the second floor, accessible only by stairs, and the building has no lifts. It’s beautifully decorated in Japanese minimalist style, large, and calm. Two large single beds were very comfortable, and the bedding was excellent. The windows open for fresh air or air conditioning. There are no bathing facilities in the room—just a modern toilet and a separate wash‑hand basin room—because all showering happens at the public onsen baths, and you wash at each onsen visit. The property provides Yukata to wear and towels for onsen use. Breakfast featured many dishes and was very traditional (fish, salad, egg, yogurt, etc.) along with coffee or tea. The food was beautifully presented and fresh. Our room faced the main road with a wonderful view of the river, weeping trees, other traditional buildings, and distant mountains covered in trees. The town has many quality eateries and is a delightful place to wander and enjoy, right at your doorstep. We loved our two nights at Akaishiya, and Yumi made our stay a delight. She was always there to greet us, ensure we had everything we needed, and arranged dinner reservations at local restaurants (both of which were the best food we’ve had in Japan). It was on the more expensive side, but we’ll only get to Kinosaki Onsen once, and it was a beautiful place to stay.
