“Local style”
True hospitality on a local island starts and ends with the person who takes care of you. Suvaasa is lucky to have Fernando—don’t mistake him for a Maldivian with that nickname—who makes your stay memorable, fascinating, easy, funny, musical, and more. We went to a picnic island where we caught fresh fish on the spot. It was a great experience: fishing, snorkeling, then barbecuing grouper in the middle of nowhere. We also went on a traditional line fishing trip, which was very funny, and after the trip the traditional garudhiya was made from the caught tuna. We enjoyed Maldivian music together, including bodu beru with Fernando drumming. It was only four days, but it felt like much more. Fernando’s family prepared all meals for me in a local style, homemade, and I can’t praise them enough for true Maldivian taste. I’ve been to over 15 islands, but the food here is the best—from mashuni to garudhiya, from kulhimas to kirugarudhiya, everything was perfect. The accommodation is simple but clean, and if you need anything, Fernando is on WhatsApp. The beach is great; I had it to myself, the ocean is clean, and the thundi gives it a unique feel. Snorkeling from the shore keeps you busy for hours. I hope to return next year because local islands like this are slowly disappearing due to mass tourism. Fernando, thanks again and see you, brother, Inshallah.
