“Convenient and good value for money. Small discomforts but nothing terrible.”

The location is the highlight – only 15 minutes from the airport and about 15–20 GBP on UBER. Self‑check‑in is always convenient, and the room was reasonably priced for what it offered. The bedroom had been converted from a living room, so while there was a back door it had no windows that could open, making the room feel stuffy; I had to open the back door to get any fresh air.

“Mieseste Absteige - Flophaus”

I chose the place because of its proximity to the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) and the airport. The photos showed a clean, bright, spacious space, but that was far from reality. From the moment I arrived it was clear that this was a run‑down squat. The two rooms we booked for three adults were on the ground floor, tiny, with ancient, worn furniture. The walls bore graffiti from previous occupants, and the whole place smelled as if long‑term incontinent patients had stayed there. The white towels had yellow stains, the bedding was musty, and the beds were tiny and obviously decades old. The so‑called communal kitchen had to be shared with other floor residents, with no structural separation, and the same applied to the bathroom with WC. The plumbing was clean, but the rest of the accommodation was a disaster: the communal kitchen had almost no equipment and barely any cutlery. Hygiene was catastrophic, the plastic floor stuck to my feet, and there was a fridge and microwave in one of the cramped bedrooms, yet there was no proper place to store laundry or hang towels. Cooking there made no sense, and there was nowhere to sit. The pictured seating area was a plastic camping table and chairs squeezed into a corner—no adult could fit.

“Good value for money”

The room was clean, with new carpet, bed, and lockers, and the bed was very comfortable. The linens and towels were white and tidy. The décor felt very dated, almost like visiting my grandma’s house with ceramic, floral knobs, but it was okay for the price. I couldn’t ventilate the room well because there was only one small window that could open. For someone on a tight budget this was a good value. The bathroom was spotless, with nice showers that had hot water in the morning and evening. The property had some glaring issues: the front fence was completely broken, giving a terrible first impression. If the booking had been cancellable, I would have left, as the exterior looked quite dodgy. The kitchen was dark, small, lacked chairs, and felt unwelcoming, so I ate out every night. Still, I received a warning that any unwashed dishes would incur a fee, which felt ironic since I never used the kitchen. The deposit was fully charged, not just blocked, and when it was refunded I lost €7 in fees or currency conversion.

Nice big room in a shared house with a mix of long‑term residents and overnight visitors to the NEC. A good curry house is just up the road, and there’s a small supermarket nearby. I’m coming back on 19 June. Thanks. The downside is that because you share the four‑double room house with other unknown people, you can either pay £5 to share any damage bills, or pay £25 extra for insurance against other people’s accidents, not washing up, or not putting bins out—surcharges. Luckily there are many options, like an extra £10 charge if you need a hand checking in, or an extra charge if you want to check out a bit later. With only one bath you have to wait until the others are done before you can brush your teeth; there’s no plug‑in bath.
