Lovely grounds. Great breakfast. The room was in need of an upgrade

The room was comfortable, cosy, spacious and warm upon arrival. The breakfast was lovely and the staff were friendly.

The continental breakfast was superb, offering a wide range of fruits, breads and a great coffee machine. The loft room was odd because the shower sat on one side of the room while the hand basin was on the opposite side.

The historic villa is lovely, with old decor, rooms and a main building that feels like part museum and part historic stay—perfect for history and vintage lovers. Breakfast was exceptional, with plenty of choice, fresh local produce, a wide selection for a continental breakfast, and heaps of fresh fruit and berries. The gardens are beautifully landscaped, full of flowers, waterfowl and birds to watch. Across the fence is an old abandoned factory; it would have been great to explore if entry wasn’t prohibited. The room was large, but I didn’t like the historic vibe, so I originally booked one of their newer apartments at the back, but was changed to a historic room, which I wasn’t a fan of at all. The bed was super hard, and the “spa” didn’t work. The location is 1 min off the main road, 2 min drive to town centre, a little longer if walking. I specifically booked one of the self‑contained newer apartments at the back of the property, a new building with kitchen and microwave facilities, which was convenient for us bringing our own food. Upon checking‑in we were told we had been “upgraded” to a “suite with spa bath”, which I didn’t understand and thought was just a larger apartment, but it turned out to be a hotel room in the annex building—the historic headmaster suite, which I wasn’t really keen on, so I had booked the new apartment. By the time we drove off from reception, parked and checked out the room, the receptionist had left for the day and we had no way to change and had to stay where we had been placed. On top of having to go out for dinner because we couldn’t heat or cook our own food, the spa bath didn’t work and the note on the bath was just a joke: “We’re sorry, the spa jets don’t work, but you’re still welcome to use the spa as a bath.” Really?? Definitely disappointed as it felt more of a downgrade than an upgrade. I will never accept an “upgrade” again before I see the room first. The bed was so horribly hard that I had to pile all the blankets I could find under it to get somewhat comfortable. The location, while not far, takes 15‑20 minutes walking to the town centre, and if you walk at night it’s a bit dark and uncomfortable. Right next to the train tracks, the heavy train traffic at night is loud and I was woken up several times by passing trains.

It was really great with wonderful choices. The only thing I would suggest is moving the television in the attic room, as it is hidden by the bedhead when you try to watch from bed. Other than that, the place was great and I would stay there again.
