“Very disapointing disgusted thought standards like this went out a long time ago”

Breakfast was fair, but the location was poor with no view; the windows faced a wall only 8 ft away, blocked by scaffolding, and we never saw any construction. The bathroom door needed a lock or latch to stay closed, the sink plug didn’t work, the carpets were disgusting, and the lounge mentioned in the booking details wasn’t available. The room was only big enough for a single person, with no side tables or cabinets, and the décor, doors, and windows were overdue for replacement.

The cooked breakfast was lovely, and the location was great – you can see Douglas Bay right outside the front door and walk down to town. It was excellent value for a solo traveller. I stayed in the single room with a shared bathroom, which was fine; the corridor was close, the shower was clean, and the bathroom was tidy.

I stayed at Melrose Guest House and was really impressed not just with the clean, comfortable room and friendly vibe, but also with the owner’s exceptional care. I left my hearing aids in the room after checking out, and he went out of his way to locate them and ensure they were safely returned to me by post. That level of service is unforgettable. I would happily stay again on my next visit to Douglas and would definitely recommend it.

The cooked breakfast was solid, and there were plenty of options. I genuinely enjoyed my stay at this traditional B&B, thanks to the lovely host and the friendly fellow guests.

The daily breakfast was always nice and freshly cooked, and the manager was consistently polite and informative about local activities. The kippers were great mid‑week. The top‑floor room had been recently renovated, and the bathroom was very nice with surprisingly good water pressure. The groovy kettle, bed throw, plenty of plugs and USB ports, and clever use of storage space showed great attention to detail. The location was convenient and the price matched what was offered. On the downside, a bedside table could have been added to the corner, a better office‑chair‑style desk chair would have helped, and there were too many stairs with no elevator.
