The accommodation itself was fine, especially our room with a lovely view, and the restaurant’s terrace over the water was very pleasant. However, Casa Congo sits in Portobelo, which isn’t really a tourist-friendly spot. Being on the Caribbean coast makes you expect a beach, but there isn’t any nice beach on the mainland near Portobelo. The only way to reach good beaches is to take a boat to the islands, so you have to go to a boat‑rental spot and arrange the trip with the boat owner. We went to Isla Mamey and had a nice day at a pretty beach (not a paradise, but pretty). The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, but they didn’t seem to know much about what the hotel actually offers, especially in the restaurant. The restaurant itself listed many options on the menu, but they weren’t actually available. Another surprise was that, after paying a high room rate in an unremarkable setting, we were charged separately to park our car at the house across the street. It’s not that they have a high‑demand parking spot; they could have simply added the parking fee to the room price, since most guests will drive. In short, the value for money was awful.

The service was excellent and they were flexible, but the bathroom lacked ventilation because the window couldn’t be opened.

The room was small but had a nice terrace, the bed was very comfortable, and there was a fridge, kettle, and a few teas. The bathroom was perfect. Breakfast was very good, and the staff were truly pleasant. The restaurant was too expensive.
