“Uncontactable Host”
I couldn’t locate the accommodation, even on Google Maps, and the host was unreachable despite a mobile number being provided for such situations 😭 I had to book a nearby hotel instead, and I’m not happy.

If you want a taste of traditional boat life in a trendy, vibrant spot, this is the place. Located on the hip canalside at Hackney Wick, you’re literally steps from lively bars and cafes, a stone’s throw from central London. We absolutely loved it! Host Charlie dropped by, was brilliant, very accommodating and friendly, and the check‑in and check‑out times were super relaxed, which is rare. The boat is quirky, traditionally furnished, not top spec, but that’s part of its charm. It’s well equipped with an inside log burner, a hot running shower, and all the basics for a few nights on the water. We loved everything! If you’re used to immaculate, top‑of‑the‑range accommodation, this boat isn’t for you. For us, the simple charm and quirkiness were appealing, it was clean, tidy, and well equipped. If you’re used to posh toilet facilities, be prepared to use a traditional sawdust toilet, which didn’t bother us at all, and there are free portaloos along the canalside. This didn’t affect our stay, as we were aware that toilet facilities would be basic on this type of accommodation.

The property was a ramshackle boat moored on a canal—old, tired, and not fit for purpose. It was advertised with a toilet and a shower, but the toilet was a compost toilet with a large bag of sawdust, and you were supposed to empty it on the grass beside the canal. None of this was in the advert; we would never have booked if we had known the toilet and shower were this bad.

The boat was clean, and the owner had clearly put effort into it and responded well to emails. However, it was hard to access, especially with luggage; we had to climb in over a gap between the boat and the bank, and our bags couldn’t fit through the doors. We never got the gas to work, so there was no cooking or hot water. Getting into the toilet/shower was very awkward. There was a very mechanical smell, probably inherent to a boat, but it was unpleasant. We couldn’t find enough information on how to get things to work. We thought it was overpriced for what was there and have stayed on other boats without problems and cheaper, even in London. We’re not fussy and had just returned from six weeks of tent camping.

The host was personally on site, welcomed us, and explained the essentials. A nice guy. If you’re looking for an extraordinary overnight stay, this is the place. You should know that you’re booking a houseboat, not a hotel room. It’s quite cramped, but the three of us managed fine. The bathroom is very small and basic.
