The place was clean and new, with excellent wifi and a cozy but small bed for two; the water was warm and the view of Mount Kinabalu was lovely, plus the location was quiet yet close to a main road that stays silent. The staff were not very communicative and we received no info about breakfast time; the breakfast, though included, was awful for a European palate, offering only sharp pasta or rice that couldn’t be eaten. The famous Nyonya kitchen was fresh and cooked on the spot but the dishes were greasy and spicy, hard to accept long‑term for someone who eats healthily in Europe; you can’t order a dish without chili because the chili paste is integral, so it’s impossible to eat it. Portions were quite small even though the menu says they’re for 3‑4 people, because Asians eat with rice and share dishes while we don’t like rice. Soundproofing is a problem, probably due to thin walls meant to protect against earthquakes; you hear every neighbor conversation and every car in the parking lot. The room wasn’t cleaned, we had a pile of trash for four days and no towel changes. The bed could use a second blanket for two people, and a small fridge would be handy, but there’s only one in the dining hall on the ground floor. The biggest missing element is a cozy atmosphere; it feels more like a dining hall than a home.
