Located near the A9 motorway on the outskirts of Alkmaar, Hotel Alkmaar features a 24-hour reception and ample free parking. The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxed, but a couple next to us (room 102) had two dogs that were left alone, and they barked a lot.

The staff were very nice and took time for us; breakfast was excellent and the room was fantastic. I couldn’t use my own hair dryer in the bathroom, and the cold meats at the breakfast bar were too chilly, as were the cucumber and tomatoes, which made the butter unspreadable – a bit colder would be better.

The breakfast area was bright and friendly, but instead of a headboard over the bed there was just a bare, dirty wall with cables and a filthy socket; no light at the bed. The toilet was broken, and even after a complaint the water kept running all night. Dirty hand towels weren’t replaced, the carpet was filthy, and the breakfast selection was poor, often unpalatable, with almost no variety – never again!
