Unicorn, Gunthorpe by Marston's Inns

“It was that good back next year for a longer stay.”

The location was great, breakfast was excellent, and the staff—Sterrie, Rachel, Ben, Kian, Greg, Rachel, Erin, Aaron, Linn, Kat, and Connor—were wonderful, friendly, and warm, making our stay truly enjoyable.

“Excellent Hostelry Handy For Nottingham And Southwell Races”

I’ve stayed at The Unicorn several times, though not consecutively for months. It’s an ancient coaching inn, first mentioned in 1695 when the owner also ran the ferry across the Trent that runs right by it; I’m not sure how much of the current building dates back that far, but parts are definitely old. Parking is very good and the location pleasant—ask for a river view. The rooms have a few steps up, but they’re not steep. Breakfast is decent, and the staff are consistently welcoming, friendly, and efficient, so I’ll be back. The only drawback is that the prices vary by date—a pattern I can’t explain—and overall it’s noticeably more expensive than a year ago.

“Lovely comfy bed and nice view but that’s it”

The bed was large and comfortable, which was the highlight. The rooms upstairs need a bit of money spent on tidying up: the soap dispenser wasn’t wall‑mounted, and the rooms just needed some TLC. The downstairs bar and restaurant were lovely, but the upstairs area felt neglected. When we checked in we were told there was no staff on site overnight.

The only glitch was the TV that kept cutting out, so I could only watch BBC 1. The staff were lovely and the food was good.
