“We zijn vrijwel direct na aankomst weggevlucht en hebben er niet één nacht geslapen.”
We found the accommodation on a dusty, cluttered site that looked abandoned, with no clear instructions on where to check in. We eventually called a number on a sign at the entrance, but no one answered. A diesel generator was running somewhere on the property, and we walked over to hear it. A man came out and inside the house I saw an elderly woman on a sickbed connected to a respirator. After introductions, the man showed us a room in an old wooden tobacco barn that had not been renovated since the 1970s; it was uninsulated and swelteringly hot, and the worst part was the unbearable musty moldy air that permeated the entire building and our room. The owner told us we were the only guests, which seemed odd even in high season. For health reasons (respiratory issues), my wife and I decided not to expose ourselves or our clothes to the conditions and left in a hurry. We booked a hotel room nearby, returned the keys to the owner the next day, explained that we would not use the accommodation and why, and he said his wife was terminally ill and on a respirator. Because the power was out, the diesel generator was running. Out of compassion we agreed to a refund of half the amount paid, but that has not happened yet. Behind all these problems lies a large personal drama, but that does not excuse that such a property should not be rented at all. This unpleasant experience cost us €1,000.00.
