“Careful! Different price + not a hostal!!”
Be careful when booking here. I just had a quite unpleasant stay and felt this place doesn't treat travelers fairly, so I’m warning others. First, the location is far from everything, as many reviews note; it would be more practical to stay in Otavalo or nearby. Second, they may try to charge you more per night than what you booked online—my case was almost double! I made it clear I wasn’t paying extra, but they joked about the price, saying it wasn’t even a campsite, indicating they don’t know the market rates; for 7/8 $ you can get a private room elsewhere. They seemed very greedy about money, and because I didn’t have exact change, they forced me to pay without it, then I had to wait hours for the change, which was incomplete and I had to ask again for the rest before checkout. Extremely unprofessional and uncomfortable. The shower had no hot water at all and no lock on the door; the bathrooms hadn’t been cleaned in a long time—trash bins overflowing with papers, mirrors so dirty they didn’t reflect light. The shared kitchen is mostly used by family members; despite the name, it’s not a hostel at all but a family house with tourist huts, so it’s hard to find space to heat water in a pot. They don’t care about washing dishes or cooking utensils for guests, a very selfish “this is my house” attitude. Nothing like a hostel at all.
