“Preis Leisungsverhältnis ein Desaster…”

We booked for three days. The mattresses at the Gasthof zur Mühle were a nightmare. After a horrific night we moved to another room in the partner hotel Helvetia (same chain). The staff confirmed the “investment backlog” of the mattresses, but you can’t fix everything at once. Unfortunately, the Helvetia mattresses were also terrible. The request for an extra blanket so we could at least sleep somewhat was forgotten. The worst part of this stay came next: I had ordered birthday flowers for my wife to be on the breakfast table with a candle in the morning, and that was forgotten too… We were frustrated and left a day early. The hotel is a disaster. This is the second review I’ve ever written in 20 years.

“Sehr gewollt und nicht gekonnt.”

Everything was very clean and room 8 was very cozy and well furnished. The location is very romantic. Despite asking, there was no way to turn on a heater in cold weather; no tea bags or similar, even though there’s a kettle. The Mühle restaurant is very drafty and the self‑service is outside.

“Malerisches Örtchen mit viel Charme und extrem leckerem Brot”

The room’s interior is tastefully rustic and cozy. Next door is the Mühle beer garden and the bakery where we grabbed delicious nettle bread (Malerweg bread) and snails for the next leg of our trip. The receptionist was very friendly and sympathetic, and she even showed us an alternative room at the sister hotel as an option to switch, so we wouldn’t have to walk back to the Mühle again. Since the Mühle room was better furnished, we chose not to switch. The bathroom was quite cramped, the bed creaked; there was no Wi‑Fi in the room, only in the restaurant; the reception is at the other end of the property, about 5 minutes on foot in a sister hotel. We received that info only after booking; we didn’t know before arrival that there was also no breakfast at the Mühle and that we’d have to go to the sister hotel for that, which made morning logistics a bit complicated, especially with a multi‑day backpack. It would be nice if this info were already in the listing and the breakfast photo removed or replaced, because otherwise it gives the impression that breakfast is on site.

“Grundsätzlich solide, aber auch sehr teuer für das Gebotene.”

Breakfast was wonderful, the selection was plentiful, and the option to make our own smoothies and omelettes was great. We also liked using the sauna. The location itself was excellent, quiet, and therefore very relaxing. In the room there was no kettle. A 0.5 L bottle of water for two guests is too little; two 1 L bottles would have been better. The power outlets at the beds didn’t work either; they were double outlets, one occupied by a bedside lamp, the other was non‑functional—we only wanted to charge a phone. The reception is now in the Helvetia hotel, about 350 m away—okay in itself, but in the evening or day if you have a problem there’s no quick link from the Mühle to the reception. As a suggestion—the TV in the room doesn’t fit; maybe a radio or games (chess, checkers, etc.) would be better. Another annoyance: we only had one key, and if you happen to not have it at the bottom, you can’t get into the building.

The breakfast was plentiful and tasty, and Schmilka is a great base for local hikes. After a day of trekking, the Biosauna and Finnish sauna were a comfortable way to unwind, and the location in the tight town center was idyllic. However, the price for a stay felt steep, especially with added parking fees. We also noticed there was no refrigerator in the room, and the Mühlenbiergarten had high prices and few alternatives for meals or supplies. While the eco‑friendly policy of a room service only every three days can be understood, the cost should reflect that; we were only told upon departure that a more frequent service was possible. Using the same drinking glass for four days was annoying, and although the sauna itself was well done, there were limited quiet spots. Overall, the value for money did not match expectations.
