“Ein Erlebnis eigener Art”
The view from the room’s window was spectacular: the mudflats, the opposite island of Föhr, the pier and the shipyard, birds, waves – all at once. I’d never seen so much “sea view” before! Dagebüll is a place where you can experience the North Sea and do plenty of activities: walks on the mudflats, boat trips to the islands, train rides inland, watching the operation on the cute Halligeisenbahn to Langeneß (a kind of vacation on Lummerland). For all that, the beach hotel is an ideal base and highly recommended. And if the weather is good, you can actually see the hotel from Föhr because of its exposed dike location. Not bad! Breakfast meets good hotel standards, and the room service was okay. I was grateful to be given room 9 with what was probably the best view. I’d love to experience that again! On the downside – for the sake of travelers – the building is not at all barrier‑free. The elevator doesn’t reach the top floor, the stairs are extremely steep, have very small steps, and are quite dangerous to navigate. The elevator, which also doesn’t serve all floors, offers a unique experience: as Sten Nadolny described years ago in “The Discovery of Slowness,” he missed the ultimate place to experience slowness – and that place is here! It’s annoying if you want to get somewhere quickly, but it’s a unique vacation experience if you embrace it. At least on the day of departure, the elevator saved me from having to carry my suitcase up and down the treacherous stairs and risk losing balance; I’m forever grateful for that. As someone who stays in hotel rooms a lot and reads a lot, I’m sensitive to the lighting in the bedroom. This beach hotel fell short here. What the interior designer had in mind as a “nightstand lamp” was probably an aesthetic pattern solution at the time, but it was functionally a disaster. The friendly staff provided a reading lamp and a suitable extension cord on the second day, so reading in bed worked out. A sufficiently large luggage rack would also have been desirable. That’s now standard in hotels. Still, the stay was relaxing and varied. I enjoyed staying here on vacation.
