The Royal Hotel, located at the eastern end of ancient Bideford Bridge, offers first-class food, friendly service, and a prime location for exploring North Devon's sights, including Clovelly village and the Tarka Trail. The hotel is close to public transport and the quayside, where boats depart for Lundy Island. It features the oak-panelled Kingsley Room and 24-hour room service, making it a historic and comfortable base for walkers, cyclists, and literary enthusiasts.

It was large, spacious and traditional

When I booked, I didn’t know the whole hotel was booked for a wedding; all rooms had been recently refurbished except the one we received. I travel a lot for work and have stayed in low‑grade hotels, but this one really earned the gold medal: carpets were badly stained, windows didn’t shut properly, the door didn’t shut and moved about 1 in. in the frame, the bathroom was filthy, and chunks had been removed from the skirting board. The hotel should not have offered this room given its condition, especially when the other rooms—according to photos—looked lovely and refurbished with nice furniture. The hotel should have informed me beforehand that the rest of the property was being used by a wedding party, which naturally caused a lot of noise late into the night (not the wedding’s fault, everyone enjoys a good time). Interactions with staff were mixed: one manager was rude to my wife on two separate occasions. If the new owners are serious about the reputation of their newly refurbished hotel, they need to contact me to offer a full refund; otherwise this review will be shared more widely and in local press.

The place is great because of its location.

The staff went out of their way to be helpful and courteous

The rooms were all very clean and the bed was comfy. The dinner was good and the breakfast was especially excellent. The staff were friendly and polite, which always makes a stay feel more homely. I especially want to thank Michelle from the restaurant team; she’s a character who takes time to chat with guests and make them feel at home—a skill that’s often missing in hospitality these days. Alex Polizzi from TV ‘Hotel Inspector’ would approve! We booked one of the cheaper rooms, and while it was comfy and spotless, the room and ensuite felt a bit tired in terms of decoration. The magnificent panelled guest drawing room/lounge on the first floor was in desperate need of some good coffee‑table books and/or decent newspapers… a few finishing touches might help make the hotel more consistently worth the slightly higher than average price it charges.
