“About one night too long for a one night stay.”
It was quiet, probably because the motel was almost empty; when I arrived it looked mothballed, almost dark, with only one unmarked light at the front desk. I thought I was in the wrong place and the building seemed abandoned. No one was at reception, and nobody appeared for about 15 minutes even after being called. The clerk—if that’s what he was—seemed to be filling in for a friend and was completely taken aback to see me; his politeness was far below his manner, he was not rude but showed a total lack of social skills and very little training in handling or welcoming a paying customer. I wasn’t asked to check in and gave no details; I wondered if I was on a film set. The room had hair all over the floor, the couch looked like it had been salvaged from the roadside after someone abandoned it, the bathroom floor was dirty, the water was warm but never hot, ceiling fans didn’t turn off, and there wasn’t even a side lamp. I realize the low rate hinted that this would be budget accommodation, but it was barely habitable. Sometimes trying to save money isn’t sensible, and places like this remind you that you can get less than you pay for even when the price is low.
