The house and surroundings were beautiful, but a car is essential since Melrose is too far to walk, with no footpaths or buses.

The blend of modern touches in a historic home was spot‑on, and I had no complaints.

Kirklands House sits off a quiet country road about a 10‑minute drive from Melrose; the former Dower House is lovely and the setting, with wide lawns and mature borders, feels almost magical. Our double room was cosy, quiet, and on a private corridor with a large bathroom that included a bath. Donald, the host, was charming and attentive. Breakfasts were superb, featuring home‑produced eggs, tomatoes, homemade jams, and other items proudly sourced from local butchers and bakers. We stayed two nights and on the second day took a train to Edinburgh—just a short drive to Tweedbank and an hour into the city. The location was ideal for us: quiet, comfortable, easy access to Edinburgh and to Melrose’s cafés and restaurants, and it felt a little special—exactly the way we wanted to finish our Scottish road trip. The only downside was that we’d liked to stay another day to explore the local countryside and Melrose itself. Overall, we’d highly recommend it as a base for a relaxing stay in beautiful countryside or as a launchpad for trips into Edinburgh.

We received plenty of good tips, but the host wasn’t prepared for us and we didn’t get the room we booked.

Douglas and Penny are two warm, helpful hosts who go out of their way to make guests comfortable. The breakfast is superb, and they pay close attention to guests’ needs and preferences.
