The ryokan was traditional, the onsens were fantastic, the host was friendly and helpful, and the area was quiet with no nighttime noise.

The host was the friendliest, speaking English well over email and in person; he explained the ryokan and showed me around right after I arrived, then took me on a short village tour and made sure I caught the correct bus. After dinner we smoked and drank sake together, chatting about many things. I preferred the outdoor onsen and enjoyed it a lot; a smoking area is near the front entrance. The self‑serve kitchen has a fridge and washing machine. Google Maps has many errors in the village, but after a short walk it’s easy to navigate. Nearby are restaurants and a 7‑11, and a slightly longer walk brings you to some of the overpriced, crowded tourist spots in Beppu’s Hells. Walking the village at night is safe and lets you see the steam from underground drains. The place can be a bit hard to find at first; I knew it would be a traditional Japanese room with a futon on tatami, but the bed felt a bit too firm for me. I wish I could have stayed longer.

The place sits in the old town and is easy to reach by car, with plenty of parking spots available. The three on‑site onsens were excellent, and the owner was consistently helpful and friendly, making the whole stay very pleasant.
