The place was clean and the buffet varied, but the location wasn’t quite ideal for us.

The hotel is worth recommending for families with school‑age children who can enjoy the activities on their own, letting parents relax or join off‑site events: the reception offered flexible early check‑in and quick response at check‑out, with a minor billing issue resolved swiftly; the Kids Club was a highlight, especially thanks to Véronika who cared for our youngest son with great attention and professionalism; the staff handle young children well and keep them engaged with suitable activities; the apartment is not very large but clean and functional, with very comfortable beds. However, the Engel‑Familotel Hochschwarzwald may not appeal to adults who want a varied culinary experience and more extensive spa facilities, and the activities for adults are limited; the evening buffet closes at 20:00, which is really early; the wellness and spa areas are smaller than expected and mainly child‑focused; overall, there are few adult activities around the hotel; the cost of the apartment, partly justified by the child‑friendly amenities, remains high relative to the overall service and dining quality; the handling of allergies by staff is inadequate and sometimes inconsistent, with allergen information hard to obtain, causing significant stress at the start of our stay—after we raised the issue, staff improved allergy checks, but we had to insist (otherwise we would have left); there is a noticeable gap between staff members, and better training on allergies would surely improve the situation.

The room was very clean, simple yet cozy; the restaurant was great and had something for kids in every corner; staff were friendly and helpful throughout. The baby playroom seemed a bit run‑down, and the playroom was the same—dirty and not inviting; the area with the bounce house and climbing frame was also unwelcoming and chilly in the hallway; a mini bar with a few drinks would be useful in the rooms.

The Familotel concept caters to both kids and parents, offering balanced dining options and buffets with good selections for each; the play opportunities for children are great, the area is nice for hiking, with adventure paths for kids and adults, and the Happy‑Club provides age‑appropriate activities; the staff are engaged and dedicated, and the hotel and house are well maintained within the available resources.
