“Arrived excited, was soon disappointed, left feeling swindled.”
The lodge sits close to bathing and kloofing spots and the chow‑chows are friendly. The staff on site were helpful overall, and Ma’ayan had clearly told us beforehand that strong winds would cut the power supply – that was appreciated. When I booked, the pictures and price made me think I was signing up for an adventurous weekend with a clean, safe place to return to. During our stay the lodge looked dirty and rundown, as if it had once been well cared for but had recently fallen into disrepair – not enough to make us leave, but enough to leave us bitterly disappointed. The room I stayed in was not secure at all – the lock could be bypassed with a butter knife. The bedsheets had dried blood on them, not from me, and I was bitten overnight by something other than mosquitoes. A large broken piece of glass lay on a bench in one of the bathrooms, creating a genuine safety hazard for kids. My fiancée was leered at and visually undressed by a staff member when getting out of a hot tub. This fits with the grimy feel of the lodgings. In hospitality, a place is judged by those who experience it, and those two experiences sum up our stay – McBains does not feel safe, especially for women and kids. If you or any of your guests fall into either of those categories, I would recommend you save your money and find alternative accommodation. The place needs a serious revamp to live up to what is being sold online.
