Its geographical position was good. Two weeks before our stay we paid for an upgraded room, were assigned room 7, the room for accessibility and mobility issues. We asked to move rooms because the Cross Hands was full. We couldn’t change room. Room 7 clearly has an issue with dampness. As soon as you opened the door it hit you – it was overpowering. The shower water in the ‘wet room’ spread as far as the door. We had to stay because I was running in the Badminton 10k race the next morning. We decided to leave a day early. Staying another evening in a dark damp room was not an option. When we arrived home all our clothes in our suitcase stunk of the damp room.
The location and staff were great, with no negatives.
“Not the best place to stay”
The location was perfect for what I needed, breakfast was cooked to order and it was nice to have freshly cooked food, parking was plentiful, and the main course in the evening was spot on. I opened the wardrobe to get another pillow and found a Rentokil rat pellets box – absolutely vile! At the bar I booked dinner for 7pm, was told probably didn’t need to book but would book me in anyway. I arrived at the restaurant to find I hadn’t been booked in and there were no tables available, so I’d have to find my own table in the bar. Unimpressed, the bar was dark and dreary, the restaurant light and airy. After having mains, I ordered dessert, and after waiting 35 minutes I questioned where it was; it turned up another 10 minutes later. It was supposed to be Eton Mess with Raspberrys, no raspberrys, no apology for the lateness.
“As we were walking the Cotswold Way, this no frills hotel met our needs for just one night's stay.”
The receptionist was helpful and responded when we reported that the plug in our sink was stuck firm, meaning that it could not let the water drain away; she got a plunger and freed the plug. The food in the restaurant was good. The double room was small, the decor tired, and the pillows uncomfortable, as they were hard and foamy.
