The George Hotel

“Friendly staff, good breakfast and comfortable rooms in the heart of Penrith.”

Because of a dates mix‑up I couldn't stay the previous night, yet the room was pre‑paid for that night and the credit was applied to my direct re‑booking with The George – that was really appreciated! I stayed on the first floor, which was quiet, and the bed was comfortable. The shower was reasonable and the breakfast, always cooked to order, was good. The staff have been around for a long time and remembered us – a reassuring sign. The parking fee at the hotel car park jumped from £3 to £6.50 per night, a 100 % increase with no added benefit for guests. It seems to be a policy change from the Everbright Hotels head office, the owners of The George, and it’s causing a lot of complaints at reception.

“Great for a stop off on the way to Scotland”

A great one‑night stop on the way up to Scotland – the room was really large, perfect for us and the dog, and breakfast in the morning was good. It’s a little dated but in a nice way.

“Lovely stop over en route to Scotland.”

The third‑floor room was spacious enough for a very comfortable bed, though the desk with the refreshment facilities was cramped between the window and the end of the bed, making it hard for the person sleeping on the wall side to pass the bed’s end. The en‑suite looked newly renovated and was lovely. The hotel had a pleasant vibe, with many people gathering for tea or coffee. Dinner and breakfast were good, and the staff were lovely. The only downside was that the third‑floor room meant no lift in this old building; we were offered luggage help on arrival (my husband declined), but it was a climb for a couple in their late 70s up and down for meals. On a next visit we’ll request a lower‑floor room if possible.

“Probably will not return unless no other options”

Not much to say positively. Parking should be free; the hotel was too hot, a bit scruffy and dated. I asked for an upgrade for a celebration and it was ignored, and there was no lift.
