“Not Showered with Gifts”
Comfortable bed and pillows. First room offered smelled terribly like stale cigarette smoke, even though it's a non-smoking property. Not wanting to be blamed for something we don't do, I returned to the front desk to explain. Asked for another room, which was granted. Second room, while somewhat clean and comfortable and with typical "hotel smell", lacked hot water in the tub/shower. Not wanting to bother the desk clerk with another complaint, I took a cold shower and was going to mention this at checkout. Note that there was hot water at the sink; only the tub/shower was affected. Upon checkout I mentioned this to the desk clerk who proceeded to tell me the issue was that I didn't use the faucet properly. I was taken aback by this insinuation and said I certainly know the OFF, C and H settings on a shower faucet. He told me that I was turning it the wrong way and needed to go back the other way for hot water. After this second insult to my intelligence, I informed him that the faucet only turns one way and that is from the bottom - OFF - all the way up to the right for H. Doesn't take a PhD to understand how to do this! He still was not convinced after I told him that after numerous tries and a 10 minute cold shower, that there was NO HOT WATER. I then decided I wasn't going to continue with being insulted and not believed, so I completed my checkout. Not once did he apologize for my inconvenience or offer any type of courtesy. I had looked forward to visiting this property for the first time since my wife and I had our wedding reception there and stayed the night in 1992. It was a Holiday Inn back then and its opulence was remarkable. What a difference 34 years makes as it no longer has the appeal it did and is looking neglected. We will be selecting another location when visiting York again
