Buon Ma Thuot

Buon Ma Thuot sits on the high basalt plateau of Dak Lak province. It is the industrial engine of Vietnam's coffee trade, where robusta beans dry on suburban driveways every dry season. The Ede people historically controlled the Dak Lak plateau in matrilineal village units called Buôn. French colonial administrators arrived in the late 19th century and established industrial coffee plantations on the nutrient-rich red volcanic soil. The city became a strategic battleground during the 20th century conflict, marking a decisive military shift in March 1975.
