introduction
Changchun is the industrial hub of Jilin province, built on auto manufacturing, film production, and puppet-empire history. Broad boulevards laid out during Japanese occupation frame massive Soviet-era brick facades and leafy forest reserves. You move between historic tram tracks and modern subway lines across five central districts. Expect freezing winters with clear skies, sour cabbage stews, and quiet museum corridors.
Airport transit trick
Take the high-speed rail from Longjia Airport directly to Changchun Station. The train ride takes 15 minutes and costs 8.5 RMB.
Industrial landmark status
The Changchun Film Studio produced China's first full-length feature film in 1949. The original studio site operates as a museum.
Vintage transit option
Tram Line 54 has run continuously since 1941. Riding the vintage cars costs 2 RMB in cash or via transit app.

Northeastern Chinese cuisine reflects cold northern winters. Portions are generous, relying on preserved cabbage, pork belly, and potato noodles. Guobao Rou—crispy fried pork slices tossed in a sweet vinegar sauce—was invented in Dongbei and remains standard on local tables. You will also find Yanbian Korean influences throughout Changchun, brought by Korean migration across the nearby border.

Portions in Changchun are double standard southern Chinese sizes. Two dishes comfortably feed three adults.
history
Changchun grew from a small trading town into a heavily planned railway hub during the early twentieth century. Its strategic location made it a focus for both Russian rail expansion and Japanese colonial development. Between 1932 and 1945, Japan made Changchun the capital of the Manchukuo puppet state under the name Hsinking. After 1949, the PRC government established its domestic automotive and film industries here.
Russian Railway Era
Construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway turns Changchun into a major rail transport link.
Capital of Manchukuo
Japan renames the city Hsinking, installing former Qing emperor Puyi as puppet ruler.
Auto Industry Launch
First Automobile Works breaks ground in Luyuan, producing China's first domestic trucks.
Film Capital
Changchun Film Studio becomes the principal state film production facility in China.
where to stay
Base yourself according to how much time you spend on transit versus outdoors. Staying in Chaoyang keeps you steps from restaurants and central subways. Kuancheng places you close to railway connections and imperial history. If you visit specifically for winter sports or crisp air, book in Jingyue near the forest slopes.
